TARGET AUDIENCE:

Primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physicians assistants, pharmacists, dieticians and other healthcare professionals interested in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

• Discuss implementation of evidence-based clinical strategies for the evaluation of lipid, diabetes, and hypertension disorders based on the most current national guidelines;
• Identify the constellation of cardiovascular risk markers in diabetic, insulin resistant, metabolic syndrome and/or obese patients;
• Debate current controversies regarding the intensity and focus of diabetes, hypertension, and lipid management for the prevention of CVD;
• Discuss management options and emerging therapies for dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension and related cardiometabolic conditions for the primary and secondary prevention of CVD;
• Discuss the roles of imaging in cardiovascular disease risk evaluation and the potential for CVD protection;
• Identify and describe the atherogenic lipid abnormalities of insulin resistance and non-insulin resistance states;
• Examine the effects of statin non-compliance including mechanism and management options for statin myopathy;
• Assess the impact of diet, weight reduction, supplements, exercise and behavior modifications on cardiovascular risk and risk factors;
• Discuss the implementation of an integrative, multidisciplinary approach in the management of patients with CVD;
• Recognize risk factors in patients with coexisting diabetes and cardiovascular disease to effectively coordinate their care;
• Identify potential gender, race and ethnic diabetes and cardiovascular disease factors to reduce health care disparities in these groups;
• Distinguish when referral is necessary for patients with dual diagnoses of CVD & Diabetes;
• Appraise available therapies for coexisting diabetes and cardiovascular disease;
• Apply appropriate therapeutic approaches within the scope of the practitioner’s primary specialty.
